No. 19 Men’s Basketball Takes Down Minnesota Morris, 73-54

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 19 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's basketball team battled the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars at home Saturday afternoon. The Gusties took down the Cougars 73-54 to win their 11th game in a row and move to 13-1 overall.

In the win, Gustavus tied the single-game program record with 18 steals, matching the previous record set 25 seasons ago back on November 18, 2000 against Luther.

Both teams struggled to score through the first seven minutes of the opening half. Carson Koch hit a three on the first Gustavus shot of the game to go up 3-0, but then neither team scored again until Max Buslee made a layup five minutes and 31 seconds into the game. The Gusties led 8-0 through the first seven minutes until the Cougars made their first basket of the game with 12:50 to go in the first half.

From then on, Gustavus found their stride; building a lead up to 19 points on an Eli Wolff three, his fourth of the first half, to take a 33-14 lead with 3:20 to go until halftime. The Cougars cut into the Gusties' lead in the closing minutes of the period, but Gustavus still led by 14 up 36-22 at the half.

In the opening three and a half minutes of the second half, the Gusties built their lead up to 21 as Myles Barnette made a layup to give Gustavus a 46-25 lead. Minnesota Morris cut the Gusties' lead down to 15 points twice midway through the second half, but Gustavus rallied to build their lead back up to 23 points up 66-43 with just over five minutes to go. The Gusties kept up the scoring pace through the final minutes as they closed out the 73-54 win over the Cougars.

Gustavus outscored Minnesota Morris 14-2 in second chance points, 20-10 in points off turnovers, 27-10 in bench points, 30-14 in points in the paint, and 15-4 in fast break points.

Barnette led the Gusties with 21 points and five assists, shooting 9-for-16 from the field. Wolff followed with 16 points and had five rebounds. Koch led the team with eight rebounds. Jake Schmitt had a team-high four steals in their record-tying day.

Up next for the Gusties is a conference road game at the Concordia University Cobbers in Moorhead on Wednesday, January 14 at 7:45 p.m.
