SAINT PETER, Minn. - After falling on Saturday, the Gustavus women's soccer team kept a clean sheet and scored twice against Saint Mary's to add three points and a win to their MIAC record this season.
The Gusties were on the offensive in the first half, trying to earn three points against the Cardinals, who came into the match with six points in the MIAC standings compared to Gustavus' four. The offensive pressure was illustrated through five shots on goal, four more than Saint Mary's. First-year
Taylor Schilling (Mankato, Minn.) had the most important chance of the half, when junior
Kate Hamski (Blaine, Minn.) chipped a ball over the Cardinal back line. Schilling got her head on the pass, pushing it past the goalkeeper, but was taken out in the process to earn a penalty kick. Hamski was elected as the kick taker and found the bottom left corner to give the Gusties the lead. Gustavus took nine shots overall, operating at a 55.5 percent shooting clip.Â
In the second stanza, the game flipped and pressure was building in favor of Saint Mary's, but the Gusties were able to weather the storm, helped by senior
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) making four saves. Just eight minutes into the second half, junior
Meghan Colebeck (South St. Paul, Minn.) doubled the Gustavus lead, getting on the end of a bouncing ball via a corner kick. First-year
Brayleigh Sumner (Grafton, Wis.) was able to get on the corner first and helped the ball fall to Colebeck, who put enough power on the ball to get through a few deflections. After the goal, the Cardinals held most of the possession, but Gustavus stayed calm to earn their second shutout of the season and have now only allowed one goal in the last three games.Â
Both goal scorers, Hamski and Colebeck, scored the first goals of their career in the Black and Gold. Olson earned her second shutout of the season with five saves and junior
Lauren Coy (Mahtomedi, Minn.), sophomore
Sophia Post (Mankato, Minn.), Hamski, sophomore
Elly Soli (Blaine, Minn.), and sophomore
Katie Thomas (Mounds View, Minn.) all played 90 minutes. Coy and senior
Halima Bigirindavyi (St. Louis Park, Minn.) led the team with two shots on goal each.Â
The Gustavus women's soccer team hosts St. Catherine at 1 p.m. on Saturday for another MIAC matchup.Â
