SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus women's soccer team held St. Catherine scoreless in the first half, but two goals within four minutes of each other to start the second half proved to be too much for the Gusties.
The wind was whipping at the Gustie Soccer Field and it showed in the matchplay, with the first half being much more evenly paced before the wind aided the Wildcats to two goals in the second half.
In the first half, Gustavus had two shots on goal compared to one for the Wildcats, but could not find a goal while the wind was in their favor. St. Catherine held an edge in total shots, 7-4, but could only force senior goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) to make one save. For the Gusties, junior
Meghan Colebeck (South St. Paul, Minn.) had the first shot on goal just 5:38 into the contest. 22 minutes later, first-year
Julia Davis (Duluth, Minn.) had another shot, a very low, driven shot which forced the hardest save of the day for the Wildcat goalkeeper.
As the teams flipped directions, so did the flow of the match. Within and after their two goals, St. Catherine had five shots on goal and four more that were either missed or blocked. The only shot of the half for Gustavus was courtesy of junior
Tessa Zachmann (Blaine, Minn.) in the 85th minute. Olson made four saves in the half.
Senior
Taylor Finney (Byron, Minn.), Zachmann, junior
Lauren Coy (Mahtomedi, Minn.), sophomore
Sophia Post (Mankato, Minn.), junior
Kate Hamski (Blaine, Minn.) and sophomore
Katie Thomas (Mounds View, Minn.) all played 90 minutes in the field to lead the team while Olson made five saves in goal.
The Gusties will travel up to Duluth next, taking on St. Scholastica at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
