SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's soccer team fell to Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday, 4-3. The goalfest included a goal and an assist from
Kieran Mahan, but it was not enough, as Viking Rosalem Tendaie scored three goals.
The first half was offensive for both teams, with five total goals. Three of those were penalty kicks and the Vikings ended the first 45 minutes with a 3-2 lead. First, senior
Jack Isroff (Valparaiso, Ind.) drew a penalty kick in the 16th minute, which allowed sophomore
Kieran Mahan (Wayzata, Minn.) to tuck the ball into the right bottom corner to give the Gusties the lead. That lead would not hold for very long, as Tendaie scored his first of the game for the Vikings on another penalty kick. Bethany Lutheran scored again less than 10 minutes later on another penalty kick to give the visitors the lead. Senior
Simon Woods (Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored his first goal of the season and seventh of his career in the 42nd minute when Mahan and him connected on a give-and-go and Woods was able to slot the ball home.Â
Both goals in the second half were scored by Bethany, but the latter was an own goal that allowed the Gusties to claw back within one. The Vikings scored in the 62nd minute after a giveaway by Gustavus and held a two goal lead for just over 12 minutes. In the 74th minute, sophomore
Thomas Depaula (Ankeny, Iowa) whipped in a corner and the wind took it, creating an inescapable position for the Viking, who headed the ball into the near corner of the net to cut their lead in half. The Gusties had 12 shots in the second half compared to the Vikings' four, but only had four that were fired on goal.Â
There were four yellow cards in the match and only one for Gustavus, junior
Jacob Westermark (Sundbyberg, Sweden) who was issued a caution on the penalty kick. The Gusties led in shots on goal, 10-5, and corners, 12-1, but could not find a fourth goal to get over the hump. Junior
Easton Hoch (Victoria, Minn.) led the team with two shots on goal.Â
Gustavus returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m., traveling to Moorhead to take on Concordia.
