DULUTH, Minn. - Gustavus women's hockey fell 5-3 to Saint Scholastica on Thursday night in the first of two conference games this weekend, despite two goals from
Noelle Hemr (So., Blaine, Minn.) and a team total of 48 shots on goal.
Gustavus opened the scoring in the first minute of the game with a pickpocket from Katlin Roberts (So., Hugo, Minn.) who passed it to
Noelle Hemr (So., Blaine Minn.) who had a beautiful one timer from the right hashmark that snuck past the Saints goalie. The Saints answered just 5 minutes later with a goal that came off a Gustavus turnover which resulted in a half breakaway that Morgan Mitchell snuck five hole on
Lily Timmons (So., Lake Elmo, Minn.). After the early exchange, both teams tightened up defensively, battling through the neutral zone and limiting high quality chances. The period ended with the game tied 1-1, setting up what would be a competitive game heading into the second period.
Gustavus possessed the puck for a majority of the first 10 minutes of the second period with a couple scoring chances that they could not capitalize on. The first goal of the second period would come from Saints Hanley Block, unassisted after
Lily Timmons (So., Lake Elmo, Minn.) made 2 good saves, then Block scoring on her third try at the 9:51 mark in the period. Just a few minutes later, the Saints would score again while the Gusties were on a line change which gave the Saints a 2 on 1 opportunity where Michell would get her second of the night as she beat the goaltender low blocker, giving the Saints a 3-1 lead. The Gusties finished the first 2nd period with a total of 27 shots on goal while the Saints had just 17.
The Gusties opened the final frame with a gritty rebound goal after Lily Mortensen (Sr., Champlin, Minn.) passed the puck to the slot where
Kylie Scott (So., Dayton, Minn) shot it off the left pad of the Saints goaltender and
Kayleigh Olson (Fy., Delano, Minn.) buried the rebound at the 4:35 mark in the period where the Gusties would now trail by one. The Saints scored late in the period at 16:30 on a rebound goal from Mitchell giving her a hattrick. The Gusties pulled their goalie to get the extra attacker but could not find the back of the net. The Saints had an empty net goal to make it 5-2, then with just 9 seconds left in the game Nicole Hemr (So., Blaine, Minn.) got her second of the night to make the final score 5-3 Saints.
