SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team battled the Hamline University Pipers at home on Friday night in a conference matchup. The Gusties earned a 5-1 victory over the Pipers on Senior Night, improving to 16-7-1 on the season.
The Gusties dominated play to start the first period, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with a goal from
Jack Wineman, with assists from
Jackson McCarthy and
Charlie Sandven. Then just over two minutes later,
Riku Brown gave Gustavus a 2-0 lead with assists by
Jackson McCarthy and
Drew Holt.
The Gusties continued their pressure early in the second period, adding a power-play goal from
Sam Rice, assisted by
Ludvig Mellgren and
Wilmer Svensson. With just over 30 seconds to play in the second period,
Kyle Doll adds a goal of his own to extend the lead to 4-0.
Hamline answered early in the third period on the power play. The Gusties responded with their second power-play goal of the night, scored by senior
Wilmer Svensson, and assisted by
Charlie Sandven and
Hunter Newhouse.
Three Gusties finished with two points. Senior
Wilmer Svensson notched two points with a goal and an assist, while
Jackson McCarthy and
Charlie Sandven each had two assists.
Senior goaltender
Zach Dosan earned the victory for Gustavus, saving 19 shots on goal.
Up next for the Gusties is their final game of the regular season against the Pipers as they go on the road to Saint Paul to face Hamline on Saturday, February 21 at 5:00 p.m. at the TRIA Rink.
