SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 21 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team battled the No. 6 Emory University Eagles on Saturday night in the consolation round of the ITA DIII National Men's Team Indoor Championship. The Gusties won #1 doubles and took the opening set in four of the singles matches but ultimately fell 5-2 to the Eagles.
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff started the match off on the right foot for Gustavus as they earned a 6-3 victory at #1 doubles. However, Emory then took #2 and #3 doubles to earn the doubles point for the match, going up 1-0 heading into singles.
The Eagles opened singles with a win in the #6 match to go up 2-0, but
Dominik Knutson took #2 singles 6-3, 6-4 to cut Emory's lead in half at 2-1.
The remaining four singles matches all went to three sets as both teams battled fiercely. The Eagles went up 3-1 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win at #4 singles.
Tyler Haddorff then finished a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) marathon battle at #3 singles as Gustavus once again cut the deficit down to one, trailing 3-2.
Emory then took both of the remaining singles matches, securing the team win over the Gusties with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory at #5 singles before winning #1 singles 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-2.
Up next for the Gusties is the final match of the ITA Team Indoor Championship. Gustavus will be competing in the 7
th place match against No. 8 Swarthmore on Sunday, February 22 at 11:00 a.m. in the Swanson Tennis Center.
