Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Jordan Benson, Sports Information Director

No. 20 Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 25 Christopher Newport 6-1, Falls 4-3 to DII Cedarville

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 20 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team battled the Division II Cedarville University Yellow Jackets and the No. 25 Christopher Newport University Captains on Tuesday. The Gusties fell to the DII Yellow Jackets 4-3 in the morning but later on defeated the Captains 6-1 in the evening to improve to 8-3 overall this season.
 
Match One
 
Cedarville won each of the three doubles matches against Gustavus, earning the one team point.
 
In singles, the Yellow Jackets took the #3 match to go up 2-0, but then Rika Cross took the #4 match 6-2, 6-1 to put the Gusties on the board and cut Cedarville's lead in half to 2-1. Madison Packer followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #5 singles to tie the match up at 2-2.
 
The Yellow Jackets followed with back-to-back points at #6 and #1 singles to clinch the pivotal fourth team point.
 
Pavla Yakimova earned one more win for Gustavus at #2 singles, rallying from a 6-7 (7-9) opening set loss to take set two 6-4 and then win the match while up 5-1 in the third-set tiebreaker after Cedarville retired early.
 
Match Two
 
Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn won #1 doubles 6-1 to open the match against Christopher Newport. Ella De Young and Allison Szalay followed with a 6-2 victory at #3 doubles to clinch the doubles team point for the Gusties.
 
In singles, Elvestrom put Gustavus up 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the #1 match. De Brujin followed with a 7-6, 5-2 win at #2 singles to give the Gusties a 3-0 lead. Noor Omar clinched the match for Gustavus with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #4 singles to secure the deciding fourth team point.
 
Lanie Davis then took #6 singles 6-4, 6-3 to take a fifth point for the Gusties. The Captains then won the #5 singles match to earn their first and only point in the team match. Molly Austin closed out the match by rallying for a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) victory at #3 singles.

Gustavus will take on both the NCAA DII team St. Cloud State University Huskies and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Wednesday, March 4 in California. The Gusties battle the Huskies at 11:30 a.m. local (10:30 a.m. CT) and the Engineers at 5:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. CT).
