Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Jordan Benson, Sports Information Director

No. 19 Women’s Tennis Wins 4-3 Over DII St. Cloud State, 5-2 Over Rensselaer

ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 19 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team battled the Division II St. Cloud State University Huskies and the No. 28 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Wednesday. The Gusties won both matches, taking down SCSU 4-3 and RPI 5-2. With the two wins, Gustavus improved to 10-3 overall this season.
 
Match One: St. Cloud State Huskies
 
The Gustie duo of Annie Klemmensen and Ashley Stroebel opened the day with a 6-3 win at #3 doubles. Jemima Vitou and Madison Packer followed with an identical 6-3 victory at #2 doubles. The Huskies won the #1 doubles match, but the Gusties had already secured the doubles team point to go up 1-0.
 
Stroebel swept the #6 singles match to give Gustavus a 2-0 lead. Vitou followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win at #5 singles to put the Gusties up 3-0. SCSU took #4 singles to claim their first team point of the day, but Packer then won #3 singles 6-4, 6-3 for Gustavus to clinch the deciding fourth team point.
 
The Huskies took the final two singles matches, but it was too late as the Gusties won 4-3.
 
Match Two: Rensselaer Engineers
 
Molly Austin and Lanie Davis got things started for Gustavus in the second match of the day, taking #2 doubles 6-1. RPI took #3 doubles, but Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn clinched the doubles team point for the Gusties with a 6-3 win at #1 doubles.
 
In singles, Ella De Young won the #5 match 6-0, 6-1 to put Gustavus up 2-0. Noor Omar followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 singles to take a third team point for the Gusties. Elvestrom secured the fourth team point and the match victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win at #1 singles for Gustavus.
 
RPI went on to win #3 and #6 singles to earn two points, but De Bruijn closed out the team victory for the Gusties by taking #2 singles 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9).
