SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 20 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team battled the St. Catherine University Wildcats on Thursday at the Wilkinson Tennis Complex in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff Semifinals. The Gusties swept the Wildcats 4-0 to improve to 28-5 overall and advance to the conference postseason championship match this weekend.
Ella De Young and
Allison Szalay opened the semifinal match with a 6-1 victory at #3 doubles.
Molly Austin and
Lanie Davis clinched the doubles team point for Gustavus with a 6-3 win at #2 doubles.
Davis put the Gusties up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of #6 singles.
Karina Elvestrom followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #1 singles to pull Gustavus to within one team point of advancing to the championship. Austin punched the Gusties' ticket to the title match, clinching the fourth team point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at #3 singles.
Up next for the Gusties is the MIAC Playoff Championship which they will host on Saturday, May 2 against the No. 43 Carleton College Knights. The start time of the title match is still up in the air: if Gustavus ends up hosting both men's and women's championships, the women's match will start at 11:30 a.m.; if not, it will be at 1:00 p.m.
