No. 16 Women’s Tennis’ Elvestrom, De Bruijn Close Out Season in NCAA Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn of the No. 16 nationally ranked Gustavus women's tennis team competed in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Friday. Elvestrom fell in her singles match and the Gustie duo dropped their doubles match as they closed out their year in the national tournament.
 
Elvestrom battled No. 16 nationally ranked Lauren Rha of Pomona-Pitzer in the singles bracket, falling 6-3, 6-3.
 
In doubles, the No. 16 ranked duo of Elvestrom and De Bruijn faced the No. 6 team of Hannah Kassaie and Katalina Wang from Case Western Reserve. The Gusties' duo fell 6-2, 6-1 against the Spartans.
 
Elvestrom closed the year with a 25-9 overall record in singles this year, going 7-3 in tournaments and 18-6 in duals at #1 singles. The sophomore won her second-consecutive ITA Midwest Regional Singles Championship this past fall, winning six matches in a row against the other top singles players in the region to take the regional title and earn All-American honors.
 
In doubles, the team of Elvestrom and De Bruijn ended the year 25-5 with a 19-2 record at #1 doubles and a 6-3 record in tournaments. The duo won five consecutive matches against the other top doubles teams in the region this past September to clinch the ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Championship, earning All-American accolades for both. The pair went on to win their first match in the Round of 16 of the ITA Cup in October.
 
The Gusties finished their team competition this season with a 30-6 overall record. In the MIAC, Gustavus went undefeated through all 10 matches to win their second consecutive and 32nd overall regular season championship. In the postseason, a pair of 4-0 wins over Bethel and Carleton secured their second in a row and 10th all-time MIAC Playoff title for the Gusties. Gustavus then hosted an NCAA Regional for the national tournament, defeating No. 28 UW-La Crosse 4-0 in the second round to advance to the Sweet 16.
