These distinguished alumni will be honored at the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet on the evening of Saturday, October 24 in Cec Eckhoff Alumni Hall following the Gustavus football game against Hamline University.
Class of 2025 Inductees:
Skylar Davis '10 – Men's Swim & Dive
Davis is a six-time All-American, a four-time All-American Honorable Mention, a 12-time MIAC All-Conference honoree, and a six-time MIAC Champion. He earned All-American honors in the 1650 Freestyle in all four years he competed, highlighted by a third-place finish at the national meet as a senior. Davis holds the Gusties' program record in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 9:25.35, set in 2007. He helped lead Gustavus to a MIAC Championship in 2008 and runner-up finishes at the conference meet in each of his other three seasons. Davis also helped the Gusties place fifth at the 2007 NCAA Championship and then eighth, 11th, and 19th in each of the following years.
Whitaker Davis '11 – Men's Swim & Dive
Davis is a four-time All-American, a two-time All-American honorable mention, a 12-time MIAC All-Conference honoree, and a four-time MIAC Champion. He holds the Gusties' program record in the 1650 Freestyle with a time of 15:36.96, set in 2011. Davis helped lead Gustavus to top-three finishes at the MIAC Championships in each of his four years, highlighted by a MIAC title in 2008. He also helped lead the Gusties to place in the top-25 at the NCAA Championships in all four years, highlighted by an eighth-place national finish in 2008. At nationals his senior year, he finished sixth in the 1650 Freestyle and seventh in the 500 Freestyle.
Carrie Gundersen '10 – Women's Swim & Dive
Gundersen is an eight-time All-American honorable mention, a 15-time MIAC All-Conference honoree, and a four-time MIAC Champion. She holds five Gustavus program records with the top times in the 200 Freestyle (1:52.49), 500 Freestyle (4:57.01), 1000 Freestyle (10:18.23), 1650 Freestyle (17:04.89), and the 800 Free Relay (7:36.83). Gundersen helped the Gusties win three MIAC Championships and finish as the runner-up the remaining year. She also helped Gustavus place as a team in three NCAA Championships, highlighted by an 18th-place finish in her senior season. Gunderson also earned four of her All-American Honorable Mention awards as a senior, placing ninth in both the 400 and 800 Freestyle Relays and 13th in both the 500 and 1650 Freestyles at the same national meet.
Janey Helland '11 – Women's Track & Field
Helland is the 2011 NCAA Division III Heptathlon Champion, a five-time All-American, a 16-time MIAC All-Conference honoree, and an eight-time MIAC Champion. She won four of her All-American awards her senior year, winning the heptathlon national championship with a Gustavus-record 5,061 points in the event, finishing as the national runner-up in the pentathlon, and placing fifth in the long jump at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships. In that same season, she was also named both the indoor and outdoor USTFCCCA Central Region Field Athlete of the Year, the MIAC Outstanding Performance of the Meet winner, and the MIAC Field Athlete of the Meet. In the Gustavus program record book, Helland ranks second in Long Jump (5.73m), third in both the 400m Hurdles (63.90) and High Jump (5' 4.25"), eighth in Javelin (37.60m), and 14th in the 800m (2:19.37).
Mark Lantz '84 – Football
Lantz is a two-time MIAC All-Conference award winner and was named the Gusties' 1984 Team MVP. The linebacker holds the Gustavus record for most total tackles in a game with 21 against Hamline his senior season. He graduated with the program record for career tackles with 292, which was held until it was broken by fellow Gustie Hall of Famer
Brian Bergstrom in 2002. In 32 career games played, he recorded 124 solo tackles, 168 assisted tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries, seven interceptions, and nine pass breakups.
Matt Lundmark '00 – Men's Tennis
Lundmark is the 2000 NCAA Doubles Championship Runner-Up, a four-time All-American, and a four-time MIAC All-Conference honoree. In addition to placing second at the national doubles championship with partner
Michael Hom his senior year, Lundmark also helped lead Gustavus to finish as the team runners-up in the NCAA tournament that season. As a junior in 1999, he made the NCAA singles quarterfinals and helped the Gusties to a third-place finish at the national championship. In the ITA's, Lundmark placed fifth as a senior and seventh as a junior in their doubles tournament. He went 47-27 (16-2 MIAC) in singles and 72-30 (20-1 MIAC) in doubles during his career, helping the Gusties to win four MIAC Championships with an undefeated 37-0 record in the conference.
Kirstin Peterson '11 – Women's Hockey
Peterson is a three-time First Team All-American, a four-time MIAC All-Conference honoree, and a two-time team captain for the Gusties. In her first year, the Gustie defender earned MIAC All-Rookie Team honors. Peterson helped lead Gustavus to four MIAC Regular Season Championships, four MIAC Playoff Championships, and four top-five finishes at the NCAA Championship. In her four years, the Gusties had a 91-16-9 overall record, going 62-5-5 in the conference. Peterson was key to the Gustavus defense being the best in the MIAC in each of her years, allowing an average of just 0.86 goals per conference game across four seasons. In 116 career games, the defender had 75 points, 16 goals, 59 assists, and a +71 plus/minus.
Katie Schenfeld '11 – Women's Golf
Schenfeld is a three-time All-American, two-time MIAC Player of the Year, a two-time MIAC Individual Champion, and a four-time MIAC All-Conference honoree. She helped lead Gustavus to top-six finishes at the NCAA Championship in each of her four years, finishing as the national runners-up in 2010 and 2011 and placing third in 2009. Individually at the national tournament, Schenfeld placed third in 2011 and fifth in 2010 to win First Team All-American recognition and 12th in 2009 to earn Second Team honors. She also helped lead Gustavus to three MIAC Championship titles and a runner-up finish, bookending her career with MIAC Senior and Rookie of the Year honors. Schenfeld holds the Gusties' 54-hole record (224) and graduated with the top-two single-season scoring average records (78.2, 78.6). In her career, she played 92 rounds with an average score of 80.3 and a low round of 73.
Tim Kennedy '82
Kennedy served in the Sports Information Department for many years, starting as an intern in 1984 and then eventually becoming the director of the department from 1990 through 2011. He then served as a Vice President of Marketing and Communications from 2012 through his retirement in 2024. Kennedy also served as a head coach of the women's soccer (1986-1989) and women's basketball (1987-1992) programs. In 2012, he received the Mike Augustin Award from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for his outstanding contribution to the promotion and support of the MIAC athletic programs and its student athletes. Kennedy also received the Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in 2010 and the Eric Norelius Award as the Outstanding Administrator at Gustavus in 2001.
The Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame recognizes athletes, coaches, and benefactors associated with the college who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics either by virtue of their performance on intercollegiate athletic teams, by representing the college, or by meritorious service on behalf of intercollegiate athletics.
Athletes become eligible for nomination to the Hall of Fame 15 years after their last year of eligibility and must have graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College. Coaches must be out of the sport involved for a period of five years to become eligible and must have had an outstanding career that is evident with a direct and significant impact on athletics at the college. Benefactors are made eligible by contributing significantly and/or consistently to the intercollegiate athletics program.
Inductees are selected by the Gustavus Hall of Fame Board: an 11-member committee consisting of current athletic administrators, former coaches, and alumni.
