SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus women's soccer team opened the MIAC campaign with a 4-0 loss to St. Olaf on Wednesday. Both teams eclipsed double digits in shots on goal, but the Gusties could not find the twine.
The first half of the game was illustrated by end-to-end action, with both teams having chances on each end, more in favor of the Oles. In the eighth minute, a penalty kick was called on the Gusties and St. Olaf's Emily Johnson, who ranks second in the country with seven goals this season, was able to tap in her rebound after senior
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) made the first save. After that, Gustavus fired two shots that forced saves before the Oles responded with two themselves. At the bookend of their sustained pressure, St. Olaf scored their second goal to double their lead. Olson made five saves in the first 45 and the Gusties had five shots on goal as well, but the Oles had 13 total shots, five more than the Gusties.
After halftime, St. Olaf struck quickly, scoring just 2:32 into the second half. The first 25 minutes were continued with three saves for Olson and just one shot on goal for the Gusties by junior

There were 23 total shots on goal on Wednesday, with St. Olaf holding a slight advantage, 13-10. There were nine total corner kicks, with the Oles again holding a 5-4 advantage. Ransanici was the leader for the Gusties with two shots and eight more had one. Junior goalkeeper
Laney Hillman (Mayer, Minn.) debuted as well, playing the last 8:47 to relieve Olson, who had nine saves.
The Gustavus women's soccer team will travel to St. Joseph on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Saint Benedict.
