FARMINGTON, Minn. – Karina Elvestrom of the No. 15 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team has been named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Elvestrom won both the No. 1 singles and doubles draw championships at the Gustavus Fall Invite this past weekend, competing against three Division II teams: University of Sioux Falls, Minnesota State University Mankato, and University of Jamestown in addition to St. Kate's.
In the No. 1 doubles draw on Saturday, the junior teamed up with first year
Rory Wahlstrand to win the doubles title, sweeping their opening match 6-0, then winning 6-4 in the semifinal, and then taking down Gurholt and Vasquez of Mankato State in a 7-5 victory of the No. 1 doubles final.
In Sunday's No. 1 singles draw, Elvestrom won her opening match 8-1 and took her semifinal match 6-3, 6-0 before winning her championship match 6-4, 6-2 over Julie Gurholt of Mankato.
Up next for Gustavus is the ITA Midwest Regional Championships that they host from Friday, September 25 through Monday, September 28 on their home courts of the Wilkinson Tennis Complex and in Saint Peter.
