SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 15 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team is hosting and competing in the 2026 ITA DIII Women's Midwest Regional Championships this weekend. In the penultimate day of the tournament, the final two rounds of the doubles draw were played.

The Gusties had three of the final four teams in the doubles tournament, and after two intense battles the Gustavus duo of Karina Elvestrom and Rory Wahlstrand proved victorious to clinch the regional doubles title; the third in a row for Elvestrom and the first for Wahlstrand. The championship also earned the pair Doubles All-American honors for the 2026-27 season.
 
Doubles Draw
 
Elvestrom and Wahlstrand began their day with a battle against Abby Weaver and Ava Andrea of UW-Whitewater in the semifinals. The Gustie team cruised to an 8-1 victory, advancing to the title match.
 
The regional championship was a match between two Gustavus doubles teams as Elvestrom and Wahlstrand faced off against Lanie Davis and Ella De Young after the latter duo won their semifinal match 8-7 (7-4) against teammates Noor Omar and Maya Brakhage.
 
In a winner-take-all battle for the doubles title, Davis and De Young took an early lead with a 7-5 victory in the opening set. Elvestrom and Wahlstrand rallied to take the second set 7-5 as the title fight moved to a super tiebreaker to decide the champion. The intense tiebreaker ended with Elvestrom and Wahlstrand winning 10-7 to complete their 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) comeback victory to secure the doubles championship.
 
Singles Draw
 
In addition to the final two rounds of the doubles draw, the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the singles draw were played.
 
Elvestrom, the two-time defending Midwest Regional Singles Champion, advanced to the title match for the third year in a row. The junior won her Elite Eight match 6-2, 6-1 over Shelby Roth of UW-LaCrosse. Elvestrom then swept her semifinals match 6-0, 6-0 against Michaela Clark of Cornell.
 
Wahlstrand won both of her matches on Sunday to earn a shot at the regional title against her teammate and fellow regional doubles champion Elvestrom. The Gustie first year took down Abigail Weaver of UW-Whitewater 7-5, 7-5 to set up a semifinal match against her Gustavus teammate Noor Omar. Wahlstrand defeated Omar 6-2, 6-0 to earn the right to compete for her first regional singles title.

Elvestrom and Wahlstrand will battle for the ITA DIII Midwest Regional Singles Championship on Monday, September 28 with first serve set for 10:00 a.m. at the Wilkinson Tennis Complex.
 
Following the conclusion of the regional tournament, both the champions and runners-up for both the singles and doubles draws will advance to compete in the national ITA Cup in October.
