ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Gustavus women's soccer team traveled to St. Paul on Tuesday night for a midweek match against Macalester. The Gusties scored in the first half, but a penalty kick in the second half proved fatal and Gustavus fell, 2-1.
Junior
Tessa Zachmann (Blaine, Minn.) scored the one goal for the Gusties and the first half was tightly contested, but a 14-3 shot margin in favor of the Scots in the second half helped apply pressure that eventually broke in the favor of the home team.
In the first half, the Gusties held a slight edge against the Scots, leading in shots on goal, 5-4. Macalester found the back of the net first, though, after a corner kick bounced around and found a Scot who slipped it past senior goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.). Just six minutes later, Gustavus responded to tie the game. A cross from junior
Lauren Coy (Mahtomedi, Minn.) found the head of sophomore
Jordyn Shear (Elk River, Minn.), but the shot was saved. Luckily for the Gusties, the ensuing rebound fell right to Zachmann, who made no mistake with her left foot, finding the right side netting to even the score. Macalester held a slight advantage with two corner kicks and each team took a total of seven shots, illustrating the even nature of the first 45.
After the intermission, the Scots came out and controlled play for the final 45. The first 15 minutes had two shots on goal by the Gusties and just one for the Scots, but in the final 45 minutes of the game, Gustavus would only find one more shot on goal. The goal for Macalester came in the 65th minute, after a foul by the Gusties inside the penalty area. Olson was wrong footed by the penalty kick and it would prove to be the final goal of the game, sending the visitors home with a loss.
First-years Braleigh Sumner (Grafton, Wis.) and
Taylor Schilling (Mankato, Minn.) led the team with two shots on goal and Olson made six saves in net. Six players played the full 90 minutes during the game.
Senior Day is next for Gustavus, hosting Augsburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Gustie Soccer Field.
