MADISON, Wis. - In a game that featured both a penalty kick and a red card to aid the Gusties, the Gustavus men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw on Friday night in Madison against Edgewood.

Senior Joe Flory (Whitchurch, England) scored his first goal of the season, picking up right where he left off last season when he scored 14 goals. Gustavus (0-0-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) controlled the first half and seemed to be in control in the second as well after an Eagle (0-0-2, 0-0-0 NACC) saw a red card, but a goal against the run of play tied the game at one and the Gusties could not find the winner up a man.

The season started about as well as it could for the Gusties, scoring in the 6th minute on a free kick by senior Joe Flory (Whitchurch, England). The penalty was drawn by junior transfer Easton Hoch (Victoria, Minn.) when a touch away from goal forced a wayward tackle by an Eagle defender. Flory was cool in his finish, waiting until the Edgewood goalkeeper committed to his left and slotting it the other way. 

Gustavus maintained control throughout the first half and fired 13 shots, six of them reaching goal. The first 10 minutes was a barrage, with five Gusties all taking shots, where Hoch and senior Darren Chukel (Hudson, Wis.) both forced saves. Hoch ended the first half with two shots on goal, along with Flory, to pace the Gusties.

In the 59th minute, after a wretched challenge on senior Simon Woods (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Edgewood was shown a red card to set the Gusties up with a man advantage for the remaining 30 minutes. 10 minutes later though, against the grain of play, a shot spurted out of a challenge and past junior goalkeeper Jackson Baker (Excelsior, Minn.) to tie the game. After the tie, the Eagles held a slight advantage, firing five shots but none of them reached Baker. Hoch forced another save in the 78th minute and Gustavus applied pressure late in the match, but the deadlock could not be broken.

Hoch registered three shots on goal in 66 minutes to pace the Gusties while Flory took five shots, two of which were on frame, to follow closely behind in 73 minutes of action. Woods was the only outfield player to play a full 90 minutes and Baker had three saves in the match. The match was highly contentious, with 11 total yellow cards and 23 fouls overall. 

After a draw tonight, the Gusties will travel down to Chicago for a fixture on Sunday afternoon to renew a rivalry with No. 20 University of Chicago. In four all-time matches, the Gusties hold a small advantage at 2-1-1 and Gustavus has won the last two.
