LINCOLN, Neb. - The Gustavus women's soccer team earned a draw against Nebraska Wesleyan this morning, 1-1. Both goals in the match came within two minutes of each other and neither team could find a goal on either side of that section.
First-year
Luci Chastey (Duluth, Minn.) opened her account for the Gusties (1-1-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) with a goal in the 68th minute and senior goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) made six saves in the contest against the Prairie Wolves (1-1-1, 0-0-0 ARC).
The first half was played tight, with both teams finding two shots each on target. After a shot on goal by first-year
Brayleigh Sumner (Grafton, Wis.), the Gusties went just under 20 minutes without a shot until sophomore
Jordyn Shear (Elk River, Minn.) forced a save with 58 seconds left in the half. Nebraska Wesleyan was able to find a small offensive edge with a 5-3 shot advantage, but could not make anything of it in terms of the scoreboard. Nine total fouls were called, five for the Prairie Wolves and four for the Gusties and Gustavus manufactured two corners compared to the one for Nebraska Wesleyan.
Gustavus did well in the opening section of the second half to weather a Prairie Wolf pack of shots from the 48th minute through the 60th, a period where Nebraska Wesleyan forced two saves from Olson amongst four other shots that were not on target. The goal for the Gusties came in the 68th minute during a flurry that included five shots on goal in 16 minutes of play. Sumner picked up an errant clearance on the right touchline and was able to narrowly send a cross in, where Chastey raced past three Prairie Wolf defenders and slotted the ball across the goal line.
Just a minute later, after a collision in the penalty area, a penalty was given in favor of Nebraska Wesleyan. Though Olson was able to get a hand on the shot, the penalty kick continued into the top left corner to tie the match. Both teams had three shots in the last six minutes of the match, which included two that forced the Nebraska Wesleyan goalkeeper to make saves, but neither team could find a winner and the match ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
The Gusties fired eight shots on goal in the second half and the Prairie Wolves also had five reach target, ramping up the offensive output compared to the first half. After a day where Gustavus had 13 shots on goal against Illinois College, the offense kept pushing on Sunday, reaching double digits again with 10 shots on goal total.
First-year forward
Taylor Schilling (Mankato, Minn.) led the team with three shots, all of which were shots on goal in 51 minutes of play. Senior
Taylor Finney (Byron, Minn.), sophomore
Sophia Post (Mankato, Minn.), and junior
Kate Hamski (Blaine Minn.) all played the full 90 minutes in the field to pace the Gusties on a hot morning in Lincoln.
Head Coach
Lauren Johnson will return to her former job on Wednesday night as the Gusties take on UW-La Crosse at 6:00 p.m. in La Crosse, Wisconsin before returning home on Saturday.
