Derek Glynn is in his second season with the Gustavus football coaching staff in the 2024-25 academic year.Â
Glynn serves as the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach for the Gusties, and helped the team to one of its best seasons in his first year.Â
Glynn helped lead the 2023 football team to its first MIAC championship game since 1987, finishing 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the MIAC. The Gusties, after defeating nationally-ranked No. 7 Saint John's for the first time in 10 years, won the Northwoods Division for the first time since the MIAC's divisional structure was created.
Prior to coming to Gustavus, Glynn served as the safeties coach and special teams coordinator at the University of Dubuque, where he also received his graduate degree. As a member of the Spartans' coaching staff, Glynn helped the defensive secondary rank third in the American Rivers Conference in overall passing defense, first in defensive efficiency (111.9), first in A-R-C in interceptions (20), first in A-R-C redzone defense (68.2%) and second in A-R-C total defense (333.9 avg/g) in the 2021 season.
In 2022, the Spartan defense finished second in the A-R-C in total passing defense (207.9), first in passing completion (51.9%) and third in overall defense (335.5 avg/g). Glynn mentored second team all-conference performer Dalton Wood who was also the leading tackler for the Spartans defense for the second consecutive season.Â
Prior to his time at Dubuque, Glynn was an assistant coach at Concordia University-St. Paul, working specifically with the team's linebackers. Glynn got his coaching start at his alma mater Augsburg University in the spring of 2019, assisting with the linebackers as a student assistant coach. Before his football coaching career, Glynn was a strength & conditioning coach.
A 2019 graduate of fellow MIAC school Augsburg University, Glynn was the epitome of a student-athlete for the Auggies. A four-year starting linebacker, Glynn was a three-time All-Conference selection and a D3football.com All-Region honoree.
