Steve Carroll is in his 23rd season as an assistant coach with the Gusties in the 2024-25 season. His responsibilities include helping recruit student-athletes and developing Gustavus goalies.
Alongside brother and head coach Mike Carroll, the Gusties have seen extraordinary success on the ice, winning 16 conference regular season titles, 14 MIAC Playoff Championships, and making 16 NCAA postseason appearances, including a national championship in 2022-23. Last season, the Gusties collected their fourth consecutive MIAC championship sweep, punching a ticket to the NCAA tourney, where they fell to eventual national champions UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals.
During Carroll's tenure behind the bench for the Gusties, he's developed a consistent pipeline of exceptional goaltending squads. Carroll has coached four goalies to seven All-Conference honors and two All-Americans in Amanda DiNella, and Katie McCoy. McCoy went on to become one of the best goaltenders in NCAA Division III history, taking after her coach after leading her team to a national title, setting program records for games played, victories, and wins in a season, and being named NCAA Tournament MVP. McCoy posted the most career wins and shutouts by any goalie in NCAA DIII and compiled an impressive record of 82-14-3 in her five seasons. She was named the 2023 USCHO.com Goaltender of the Year, a finalist for the Laura Hurd Player of the Year Award in 2024, and is just the second netminder in program history to earn multiple All-America honors.
Carroll has more than 30 years of goalie coaching experience and is regarded as one of the top goalie instructors in the Midwest. He also serves as goalie coach-in-chief for USA Hockey’s Minnesota District. Carroll runs his own goalie school and each year coaches hundreds of boys and girls of all skill levels from all across the country. He is also the founder and director of Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance Dave Peterson Goalie Camp and HP Shooting Camp, and was named the 2024 winner of USA Hockey’s National Goaltending Developer Award.
As a player, Carroll was a two-time All-America goaltender for Minnesota State University-Mankato. Carroll was a foiur-year letterwinner, leading the Mavericks to four NCAA national tournaments where they finished first once (1979-80), second once (1978-79) and third twice (1977-78 and 1980-81). He was selected as the 1980 NCAA Division II National Tournament MVP after leading his team to a national title. Carroll was named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the best player in men's college hockey. Carroll was awarded an NHL free-agent tryout with the Minnesota North Stars, receiving an invite from the North Stars' General Manager Lou Nanne.
Upon graduation, Carroll held records for games played by a goaltender (104), career victories (82), career saves (3,570), saves in a season (1,090 - 1979-80), and wins in a season (29 - 1979-80). He was named MSU-Mankato's Male Athlete of the Century in 2000 and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2005, Carroll was also inducted into the Edina High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is joined in both halls by brothers Mike Carroll (MSU '13, EHS '12) and Pat Carroll ('01, '08).
Carroll serves as the Founder and Director of Goalie Development at the Carroll Goalie School, which he started in 1995.
