SAINT PETER, Minn. - In a battle of undefeated teams within the MIAC, No. 20 Gustavus proved to be the top dog in a decisive 3-0 win over Saint Benedict on Saturday. The Gusties improve to 20-6 overall and 8-0 in the MIAC, while the Bennies drop to 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the league.
Saint Ben's had the upper hand to start the game with a 14-7 lead until the Gusties responded with six straight points to close the gap to one and finishing the set on a 9-1 run for a 25-21 win, highlighted by five
Madi Kes kills in the ending stretch.
The Bennies again got out to an early lead in the second at 5-1, but the Gusties had another answer with a 6-1 run to take an 8-6 lead. Saint Ben's regained the lead once more and tied the score three more times, but a 9-2 spree closed out the set at 25-18.
Gustavus got out to a 5-1 lead in the third and never looked back in a convincing 25-11 decision.
The Gusties hit .333 on the attack, led by Kes with a .667 hitting percentage along with 12 kills.
Marlee Turn added 12 kills and 10 digs, and is now four kills shy of reaching 1,000 in her career.
Kasie Tweet had 38 assists and
Maren Sundberg reached 20 digs for the ninth time this season.
Gustavus travels to Augsburg next Friday night.
