SAINT PETER, Minn. — Despite 29 shots in Tuesday's game against Saint Mary's, the Gustavus men's soccer couldn't manage to get one past Cardinal goalkeeper Daniel Sessler, who saved 15 shots on goal en route to a 1-0 victory for the Cardinals. Saint Mary's netted one goal at minute 23 of the first half, and it was just enough to sneak past the Gusties, who drop to 3-2-4 overall and 1-2-2 in MIAC play.
Gustavus certainly dominated the offensive play of the game, outshooting the Cardinals 29-3, including a mark of 15-3 in shots on goal. The sole goal of the game came off the foot of Cardinal leading scorer Cohan Hare, who set up a touch from Jack Hurley on a free kick to beat
Wesley Sanders on the far post.
The Gusties had their chance to even the score on multiple occasions, most notably a penalty kick opportunity at the beginning of the second half.
Otis Anderson lined up to take the shot, but was met by Sessler between the pipes to maintain the Saint Mary's lead. Anderson was knocking on the Sessler's door all game, totaling a team-leading four shots on goal, including a pair that tipped off Sessler's fingertips and out of play, and another shot off the crossbar.
The two teams played a physical game, with 18 fouls called and five cards distributed. The Gusties managed 15 corner kicks, including 10 in the second half, to the Cardinals' one overall. Behind Anderson,
Owen Johnson,
Nate Rouaud, and
Simon Woods each tallied two shots on frame.
The Gusties are back for MIAC action Friday against Saint John's.
