SAINT PETER, Minn. - Saint Benedict has had the better of Gustavus in women's soccer over the past five seasons with a 5-0 record while outscoring the Gusties 17-4. That losing streak came to an end Saturday as the Gusties shut out the Bennies 1-0 to improve to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Cambelle Waldspurger's second goal of the season at the 21:14 mark proved to be the lone score of the game in a tightly-contested battle.
Callie Patraw had a one-touch pass to Waldspurger at the top of the 18 who fired top right corner of the net for the goal. The Gustie goal was their only shot on target all game but it was all they needed.
Saint Ben's had the Gusties on their heels late in the game with its best scoring chance coming in the 76th minute, but
Katelyn Olson came up with a diving stop and was able to pounce on the loose ball before the Bennies could send it to the back of the net. Olson finished with four saves for her second consecutive clean sheet.
"We came out ready for battle and dug deep to get the win," Head Coach
Laura Burnett-Kurie said. "Our goals going into the game were to put together a full 90, enjoy the beautiful moments and the gritty moments, and believe in ourselves and our teammates. We certainly accomplished all of those goals. The grit, fight and energy this team showed, our bench is always impressive, but it was out of this world today. Every game paints a different picture, and we rose to the challenge today and put together a gritty 90 minutes. We could not be more proud of this team and the effort today. And the fans were fantastic."
Gustavus next travels to St. Catherine on Wednesday.
