BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its 2023 volleyball awards Wednesday and Gustavus had seven individuals honored, highlighted by
Kasie Tweet earning MIAC Offensive Player of the Year and
Rachelle Sherden garnering MIAC Coach of the Year. Joining Tweet on the All-Conference Team are
Madi Kes,
Lauren Klaith,
Sydney Olson,
Maren Sundberg, and
Marlee Turn.Â
Tweet, who also earned All-Conference last season, leads the MIAC and ranks eighth in Division III with 1,064 assists. Her 10.23 assists per set are nearly one more than the next conference setter. Playing in all 104 sets this season, Tweet has quarterbacked the Gusties to a .219 hitting percentage which ranks second in the conference. She is also a defensive presence, ranking 17th in the MIAC with 3.13 digs per set. Tweet eclipsed the 3,000 career assist mark this season, becoming just the fifth player in program history to reach that milestone. Tweet is the third consecutive Gustie to earn MIAC Offensive Player of the Year, following Kate Holtan (2021) and Turn (2022).Â
Sherden earns her fourth MIAC Coach of the Year honor and second straight after being recognized in 2015, 2018, and 2022. Sherden directed the Gusties to their third consecutive MIAC regular season championship with a perfect 11-0 league record for the second straight season. Ten of the Gusties' 11 conference wins this season were in straight sets while the other one was in four sets for a 33-1 set record in the MIAC. Sherden and the Gusties enter the MIAC playoffs as the No. 1 seed and ranked No. 18 in the latest AVCA Division III poll.Â
Kes earns her first All-Conference honor after posting 225 kills (2.16/set) with a .276 hitting percentage, which ranks fourth in the MIAC. In 104 sets, Kes has made 83 blocks, which ranks fifth in the league.Â
Klaith also captures her first All-MIAC nod after tallying 335 kills (3.22/set) with a .248 attack percentage. Klaith has also played in all 104 sets with 40 blocks and 45 digs.Â
Olson, garnering her first All-MIAC selection as well, has posted 176 kills (1.69/set) with a .254 hitting percentage, which ranks eighth in the MIAC. Olson leads the team and ranks second in the MIAC with 49 service aces. Her 87 blocks are most in the league. Playing in all 104 sets, Olson has also made 103 digs (0.99/set).Â
Sundberg, who earns her second straight All-Conference honor, leads the back line with 501 digs (4.82/set), ranking third in the MIAC. Sundberg has also played in all 104 sets with a .944 receiving percentage, 23 service aces, and 95 assists.Â
Turn also claims her second straight All-Conference selection after leading the team with 340 kills (3.79/set), ranking fifth in the MIAC. Turn plays a big defensive role with 329 digs (3.26/set) and 24 blocks. She also has 29 service aces. Turn became the 16th member of Gustavus's 1,000 career kill club and currently has 1,019.Â
