Gusties Compete on Day One of Grinnell Pioneer Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Gustavus swimming and diving teams traveled to Grinnell, Iowa Friday to take part in Grinnell's two-day Pioneer Classic. The Gusties won three events on day one, with the women taking first in the 200 freestyle relay and Lucy Peterson winning the 50 free, while Kieran Ripken won the 50 free for the men in 20.95. The Gusties also added seven second place finishes on day one. 

The Gustie women took first in the 200 free relay, as the team of Olivia Koeneman, Stella Anderson Moye, Chelsy Johnson, and Peterson touched the wall in 1:37.94. Peterson also won the 50 free in 23.61. Anderson Moye added an impressive finish in the 500 free, taking second in 5:21.94. Anderson Moye, Peterson, Hadley Wartner, and Leah Soukup added a second place finish in the 400 medley relay, finishing in 4:04.12 behind host Grinnell (3:58.88).

On the men's side, the Ripken brothers dominated the 50 free, as Kieran took first in 20.95 and brother Braden took second in 21.32. Other notable performances for the Gusties included a second place finish in the 200 free relay, as Aiden Shermak, Matt Strom, and the Ripken brothers finished in 1:24.94. Matt Strom also took second in the 500 free, breaking the previous meet record with a time of 4:39.79. Peyton Richardson took second for the Gusties in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:55.52. Richardson was also a part of another new meet record in the 400 medley relay as he, Strom, Kieran Ripken and Shermak finished second in 3:26.41.

The Gusties are back in action at Grinnell tomorrow for day two of competition.
