SAINT PETER, Minn. — Men's tennis had a perfect day in matches against UW-Eau Claire and conference opponent Saint Mary's Saturday morning and afternoon, rolling to a pair of 9-0 wins over both opponents.
The Gusties started Saturday off strong with a perfect showing against the Blugolds, led by
Marco Siviero (So., Sao Miguel de Oeste, Brazil) in the No. 1 singles spot. Siviero rolled to 6-3 and 6-1 victories to start the day off for the Gusties. In the doubles,
Nick Aney (Sr., Rochester) and
Daniel Fouchier (Sr., Nootdorp, Netherlands) won in the No. 1 spot with an 8-6 victory.
"The guys played two solid matches today. We came out with good energy and execution in the doubles against Eau Claire," said Head Coach Tommy Valentini. "Alex and Gage were clinical at 2 and Sourabh and Marco got better as their match went on to pull away.
"Nick and Daniel did well to stay poised and composed down the stretch to get us the sweep. From there, our singles players rode the momentum well and played solid matches. Gage and Sourabh both rose to the occasion nicely in the singles."
Against Saint Mary's,
Jack Bergmeyer (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.),
Drew Elofson (Sr., Saint Peter), and
Luke Fridinger (Fy., Woodbury) all had perfect singles showings, going 6-0 across the board for three victories. Elofson and doubles partner
Tyler Haddorff (Fy., Burnsville) also had a perfect 8-0 performance in the No. 1 doubles spot, helping the Gusties to their second victory of the day.
"Against SMU we were great in sticking to our game plan in doubles. Rafa stayed the course in the second set at 1 singles and from there on down we played well at every spot. We're thankful for two good team wins today and we're very much looking forward to a great week of preparation and to all the challenges of next week's ITA National Indoors.
The Gusties are back next weekend to host the ITA National Indoor Tournament at the Swanson Tennis Center on campus. Competition begins Friday and will run through the 26th.
