ROME, Ga. – Dominik Knutson and
Takura Mhwandagara of the No. 23 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team competed in the opening day of the ITA Cup on Thursday. The duo earned their way to the national tournament as the doubles finalists of the ITA Midwest Regional earlier this month with Knutson making his way to the singles bracket as the regional finalist in that draw as well.
Knutson, the No. 24 ranked singles player in the nation at the end of last year, faced off against No. 13 Drew Goldman of Pomona Pitzer College in the Round of 16 in the morning. The Gustie senior battled but fell 6-2, 6-1 to the Sagehen junior.
In doubles, Knutson and Mhwandagara took on Chase Kelley and Jesse Yang of the University of Chicago in the evening. The Gustavus duo fell 6-3 in the first set but battled back to push the second set to a tiebreaker. The UChicago team took the tiebreaker as Knutson and Mhwandagara fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the national Round of 16.
The ITA Cup continues through the weekend until the championship matches are played on Sunday, October 18.
