SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus men's tennis team defeated No. 23 UW-Whitewater 5-1 to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Gusties and the Warhawks are familiar foes, as Gustavus defeated Whitewater 5-3 earlier this season. The Gusties brought the same energy to the second round NCAA matchup, sweeping the doubles competition 3-0 and getting wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles to seal the victory.
Marco Siviero (So., Sao Miguel de Oeste, Brazil) and
Sourabh Terakanambi (Sr., Apple Valley) led the way, getting an 8-4 victory to start the day off, winning their fourth straight doubles competition for a season record of 18-6.
Alex Budde (Sr., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and partner
Gage Gohl (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up a victory of 8-5 in the No. 2 spot, before
Nick Aney (Sr., Rochester) and
Daniel Fouchier (Sr., Nootdorp Netherlands) clinched the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win of their own.
In the singles, Budde secured the fourth point for the Gusties, getting wins of 6-3 and 6-1 in the No. 5 singles, while
Rafael Costa (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) closed the match out with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 6 spot.
The Gusties, now 25-10, will face the winner of Grinnell College and University of Chicago Sunday at noon.
