RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The Gustavus women's soccer team scored a goal in each half of a 2-1 win Sunday at UW-River Falls. The Gusties improve to 3-1 overall while the Falcons suffer their first loss at 2-1-1.
"Another great team performance today," Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. "It was a physical battle, and our team rose to the challenge. We controlled most of the tempo and created a lot of very dangerous looks."
Makenna Huetten scored her first goal of the season at the 28:56 mark of the first and the Gusties held on to a 1-0 lead at half. Huetten finish the game with a game-high three shots on goal.
Callie Patraw (Elk River, Minn.) gave the visitors a two-goal lead in the 69th minute with her first goal of the season, assisted by
Annika Lewis (Hudson, Wis.). With just 1:34 left in the match, the Falcons ended the shutout with a score, but the Gusties were able to hold on for the victory.
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) got her first start in goal and recorded four saves.
"Great to see first goals by Mak and Callie, who hit a crossbar and a couple posts as well, which was exciting to see," Burnett-Kurie said. "First 90 in between the pipes for Katelyn and she rose to the challenge. We are happy with how we've started off the season, and motivated to continue to get better in conference play starting on Tuesday."
Gustavus outshot UWRF 11-5 and had six fewer fouls (7-1).
The Gusties open MIAC play Tuesday afternoon at Carleton.
