DUBUQUE, Iowa — The No. 15 Gustavus volleyball team traveled to Dubuque for the Loras Invitational Saturday, leaving the tournament 2-0, defeating Coe College and host Loras to improve to 10-2 overall.
Gustavus 3, Coe 0
Fresh off a 3-0 loss to No. 17 Cornell the night before, the Gusties were looking to get back on the winning track against Coe, and they did so in impressive fashion. Gustavus swept the Kohawks in three sets, winning 25-19, 25-16, and 25-17 to get the win.
The Gusties and Kohawks battled back-and-forth in set one, exchanging points until the Gusties pulled away with a pair of kills from
Sydney Olson (Willmar, Minn.). Olson sparked a seven-point rally to end the first set 25-19.
Gustavus jumped out early in set two and never looked back, building the lead to as many as nine points, including the set two final, 25-16. The final set was more of the same, as the Gusties downed Coe 25-17, getting four service aces to drive the victory.
Lauren Klaith (Rockford, Minn.) led a balanced Gustie offense, totaling 13 kills against Coe.
Madi Kes (Jordan, Minn.) and
Marlee Turn (Kennedy, Minn.) chipped in nine and eight kills, respectively.
Kasie Tweet (Adrian, Minn.) continued to build her team-lead in assists, adding 33 more, as well as 10 digs for the double-double. The Gusties totaled eight service aces against the Kohawks, including three from Olson.
Gustavus 3, Loras 1
Building off their momentum from their first match of the day, the Gusties defeated host Loras 3-1 to close out the weekend in Iowaa.
Gustavus held the lead for much of the first set, but the Duhawks battled back to win 25-23. Unfazed, the Gusties put together identical 25-19 scores in sets two and three, and sealed the deal with a 25-17 victory in set four.
Marlee Turn was a force to be reckoned with against Loras, totaling 19 kills against the Duhawks, including six in each of the second and third sets. Turn helped the Gusties battle back from a deficit in set two to a five point lead and eventual victory.
Klaith matched her kills against Coe with 13 more against Loras, finishing with an attacking percentage of .333.
Mayssa Tweet (Adrian, Minn.) led the Gustie defense with 19 digs, a career high, while her sister Kasie tacked on 12 digs of her own and 36 more assists. The elder Tweet and
Sydney Olson each shared the team-lead with four service aces a piece.
