MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — The Gustavus men's golf team opened its 2023 fall season Saturday with the first round of a dual against Saint John's at Rush Creek Golf Club. The two Gustie teams carded a 311 and 309 to the Johnnies 301 and 303.

Teddy Kaste (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the way for the first Gustie team, posting a 73 on day one. First-year Blake Forrest (Maple Grove, Minn.) matched Kaste's 73 to lead team two. Pelayo Perez Crespo (Sotogrande, Spain) and Wyatt Carlson (Wayzata, Minn.) each shot a 75 behind Kaste and Forrest, respectively. The Johnnies' Ethan Kress led the way for the day, carding a 70 on day one.

"Rush Creek can be a very demanding golf course," said head coach Scott Moe. "It's a great course, but if your course management is off, you will be penalized. That's what happened with us today. We missed in some bad spots and had some big numbers. We need to clean that up tomorrow at Pioneer Creek. I look forward to having another opportunity to compete, and I expect us as a group to do the same."
