SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 18 Gustavus volleyball opened conference play Friday night at Gus Young Court and treated the Homecoming crowd to a 3-0 sweep over Saint Mary's.
The Gusties got off to a slow start in the first, falling behind five different times. After four straight Cardinal points for a 19-15 visitor lead, the Gusties found their footing and went on a 10-2 run to close out the set.
Gustavus rolled its momentum into the second with a quick 6-1 lead and never looked back. Saint Mary's was able to tie the score at 10-10, but the home squad responded with five straight points and went on to win 25-18.
The third set went back and forth at the start until halfway through the frame. Leading 13-12, Gustavus scored the final 11 points with
Sydney Olson (Willmar, Minn.) on the serve, who tallied three aces.
After starting the match with a .156 hitting percentage, the Gusties finished the night with a .268 percentage, compared to .115 by the Cardinals.
Leah Berg (Kenyon, Minn.) led the Gusties with 11 kills and a .474 hitting percentage.
Marlee Turn (Kennedy, Minn.) was right behind with 10 kills.
Kasie Tweet (Adrian, Minn.) finished with 30 assists and
Mayssa Tweet (Adrian, Minn.) led the defense with 12 digs.
Gustavus plays in the Carleton Triangular tomorrow, facing Carleton at noon and Grinnell at 2 p.m.
