Women's Tennis Hosts ITA Alternative

SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's tennis team hosted multiple teams at the Swanson Tennis Center over the weekend for the ITA Alternative, and racked up multiple regional wins in the process.

The Gusties fielded seven athletes in the competition. Mary Enright (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) led the Gusties in the No. 1 singles, finishing as the consolation bracket runner-up, falling to St. Catherine's Anna Luksik. Madison Packer (Wadena, Minn.) finished fourth in the No. 2 singles, while Ashley Stroebel (Maplewood, Minn.) finished as the consolation champion in the No. 3 spot. Stroebel put together commanding wins over conference opponents from Saint Mary's (8-3) and St. Olaf (8-1).

Emily Carlson (Maple Grove, Minn.), in the No. 4 singles, put together a duo of victories to finish third in her bracket, defeating Elena Ruzevich of Saint Mary's 8-2 in the winner's consolation. Annie Klemmensen (Edina, Minn.) finished as the No. 5 singles runner-up, defeating St. Scholastica's Claire Rewertz 6-1 and 6-3 and Concordia's Lizzie Allan 8-4 before falling in her bracket's championship, 8-6, to St. Catherine's Monica Zink. Veranique Poquette (Champlin, Minn.) finished third overall in No. 6 singles, while Taylor Ruhl (Brainerd, Minn.) closed out the Gustie singles competition winning the No. 7 bracket.

Two of the Gusties' three doubles teams finished third overall in their draws. Enright and Stroebel and Ruhl and Carlson each finished third in the second and third doubles competitions, respectively, while Klemmensen and Packer finished fourth in the No. 1 doubles draw.

"It was a great weekend for our second group," said Head Coach Jon Carlson. "They played against some very solid competition and a lot of varsity players from other teams in their draws. That kind of experience is only going to lead to more experience and better play going foward."
