SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 16 Gustavus volleyball made quick work of Macalester on Wednesday night, winning in straight sets 26-24, 25-8, 25-17. The Gusties improve to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC with their 23rd consecutive conference victory.
Macalester had the upper hand early in the first set with a 4-2 lead before the Gusties fought back with eight ties. The Scots had an answer each time by not allowing the Gusties to take the lead until the home team went on a 7-1 run late for a 23-20 advantage. Macalester was able to tie the score twice more at 23-23 and 24-24, but
Leah Berg (Kenyon, Minn.) and
Madi Kes (Jordan, Minn.) finished off the set with a pair of kills.
The second set was dominated by the Gusties from the onset. Taking a 5-0 lead, Gustavus never trailed and had a scoring streak of 11 straight points midway through the set for a 20-5 advantage.
The third frame was much more competitive with eight ties before the Gusties scored five straight points for a 14-10 lead and maintained the advantage the rest of the way.
Lauren Klaith (Rockford, Minn.) had a number of impressive kills, finishing the night with a team-leading 16 to go along with a .469 attack percentage.
Marlee Turn (Kennedy, Minn.) was next with 15 kills and a .344 percentage. Turn also led the back line with 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
Kasie Tweet (Adrian, Minn.) finished with 32 assists.
Gustavus has the weekend off and then plays a non-conference match at UW-River Falls on Tuesday night.
