MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After two come-from-behind victories in their last two games, the Gustavus women's soccer team was unable to recreate the magic at Augsburg, falling 2-1 to the Auggies in Minneapolis.
Augsburg set the tone early, scoring just five minutes into the game. Augsburg's Jayla Ponce, who leads the conference in assists, sent a pass through the middle to find a rushing Megan Hensel, who sent the game's opening goal past
Katelyn Olson.
The Auggies scored once more, this time in the last five minutes of the half, as Ponce added another assist on the night, sending a through ball past a collection of Gustie defenders, only to be picked up by the Auggies' Grace Dickerson, who beat Olson on the far post.
Augsburg nearly walked away with the clean sheet, but
Hannah Cisar foiled the shutout with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. As time dwindled down, Gustavus took advantage of two corner kicks to scramble the Augsburg defense. The Gusties managed to get the ball through to Cisar, who beat the Auggie goalkeeper with a shot low left with seven seconds left in the game.
Gustavus tallied two shots on goal to the Auggies' three.
Cambelle Waldspurger accounted for the other Gustie attempt, and Olson finished with one save between the pipes.
Gustavus, now 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play, is back at home for a pair of games next week, hosting Northwestern-St. Paul for a non-conference match Thursday, followed by a MIAC contest against Saint Benedict on Saturday.
