MANKATO, Minn. - Three second half goals Wednesday propelled the Gustavus women's soccer team to a 4-1 win at Bethany Lutheran. The Gusties improve to 2-1 overall while the Vikings drop to 1-1-1.
Bethany got on the board first with a goal in the seventh minute before
Hannah Cisar (Sioux Falls, S.D.) netted the equalizer at the 28:14 mark with the help of
Gabriela Rodriguez (Waseca, Minn.) and
Lillian Selberg. The score remained 1-1 at half with the Gusties outshooting the Vikings 5-1.
Nearly eight minutes in the second, Cisar tallied her second goal of the game and career, which proved to be the game-winner, on a pass from
Annika Lewis (Hudson, Wis.). Selberg got on the statsheet with a goal five minutes later with the help of
Cambelle Waldspurger (Mahtomedi, Minn.).
Jordan Oelkers (Byron, Minn.) then put a stamp on the victory with a goal in the 84th minutes as
Grace Dlouhy (Saint Peter, Minn.) got her first career assist.
Gustavus outshot Bethany 12-6 as
Claire Hemstock (North Mankato, Minn.) made five saves.
"We faced adversity we weren't expecting to see early in the game and then needed to problem solve and adjust in order to adapt," Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. "We came out as a team with an edge in the second half and took it to them. Bethany was as very organized and challenged us for a full 90 minutes. We are proud of our team for figuring out how we could be successful, putting the ball in the back of the net and finishing out the game. We are in a pivotal part of our season to really think about who we are as a team and who we want to be. Today was a great step in that direction and we are confident with our talent, depth and leadership that we will continue to made strides each day. Overall great win and a great battle."
The Gusties travel to UW-River Falls on Sunday afternoon.
