SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Gustavus men's basketball team erased an early 10-point deficit Wednesday night and hit clutch shots down the stretch for a 73-63 win over St. Olaf at Gus Young Court. After a decisive 97-59 win over the Oles on Nov. 21, the Gusties complete the series sweep over St. Olaf for the first time since the 2008-09 season.Â
Brady Kienitz started the game with a three on the opening possession and the Gusties maintained the advantage for the first three minutes of the game, leading 7-6. St. Olaf responded with 11 consecutive points to lead by as much as 10 points at both the 14:05 and 13:24 marks of the first before the Gusties whittled the difference down to three points on an
Evan Wieker layup with 6:49 on the clock.Â
After trading buckets for the next four minutes, the Gusties got within one point twice on a
Dawson Kellen jumper and a layup by
Adam Biewen, making the score 33-32 with 1:24 left in the half. The Oles were able to add three free throws to take a 36-32 lead into the locker room.Â
St. Olaf held the lead for nearly seven minutes into the second half until
Jonah Anderson connected on a jumper in the paint for a 45-44 lead with 13:19 remaining. The lead switched sides three more times over the next three minutes until
Adam Biewen hit a three for a 53-51 advantage. A free throw by
Evan Wieker at the 8:48 mark gave the home team the lead for good as it held off the Oles and finished strong with a 13-4 run to close out the game.Â
Gustavus shot 51 percent from the field and was 9-for-19 from long range.
Spencer Swanson led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Biewen was next with 16 points, shooting 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.Â
The Gusties have the weekend off and then hit the road next Wednesday for a matchup at St. Scholastica.Â
