SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 6 Gustavus men's soccer escaped with a 2-1 win over UW-Superior on Sunday afternoon, remaining unbeaten at 11-0-2 overall.
After playing most of the first half in their own defensive end, the Gusties broke loose in the 33rd minute as
Jared Hecht connected with
Rivaldo Pena for a goal. The score remained 1-0 at half with the Yellowjackets out-shooting the Gusties 9-4.
Five minutes into the second half, Hecht sprung free on a pass from
Owen Johnson to score his third goal of the season. The Gusties were called for a penalty in the box in the 81st minute and the Yellowjackets connected on the PK for their first goal of the game.
The Gusties were able to fend off a late rally by the visitors to secure the one-goal margin of victory. UW-Superior outshot the Gusties 16-8 overall but the home team had more shots on goal, 5-4.
Egan Bedwell made three saves.
Gustavus returns to conference play Saturday at home against Concordia.
