SAINT PETER, Minn. - In a battle of the top two teams in MIAC men's soccer, No. 5 Gustavus and St. Olaf played to a 3-3 draw on Wednesday afternoon. The Gusties move to 12-0-3 overall, while both teams are now 6-0-2 in the league.
St. Olaf got the scoring started five minutes into the game, taking advantage of some miscommunication between Gusties in front of their own goal, and Gustavus was faced with its first deficit of the season.
Leo Runestad evened the score in the 21st minute, chipping in a goal from the right side on a through-ball from
Carlos Robles. Seven minutes later,
Rivaldo Pena found
Miles Redmond open up the middle of the field who beat the defenders for a breakaway goal - the first of his career. And in the 33rd minute, Runestad tallied his second goal of the game, finding the bottom right corner of the net with the help of
Spencer Skjeldestad.
Gustavus carried a 3-1 lead into halftime, but the Oles came out of the break strong with a pair of goals within three minutes of each other, tying the score 3-3 in the 52nd minute. The Gusties posted 12 shots in the second half, including a flurry of shots shortly after the Oles' third goal, but couldn't connect for the game-winner. St. Olaf had 10 shots in the second half, but also couldn't score its fourth goal.
The Gusties out-shot the Oles 23-14 overall and 7-5 on goal.
Egan Bedwell made a pair of saves after facing five shots.
Gustavus hits the road Saturday afternoon for a MIAC matchup at Bethel.
