KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Gustavus junior forward
Cambelle Waldspurger (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and sophomore goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) were named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region IX team for the first time in their careers on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Waldspurger was selected as an All-Conference honoree in November, while Olson was a two-time MIAC Defensive Player of the Week this season.
Waldspurger earned her third MIAC honor this season and second All-Conference distinction, as she received Honorable Mention All-MIAC in her freshman year. She led the Gusties in scoring through her first two seasons and finished second in scoring this season with 16 points, playing and starting in all 19 of the Gusties' games.
Waldspurger scored six goals this season and chipped in four assists, totaling 67 shots and 24 on goal. In conference play, Waldspurger scored three goals – two of which were game-winners – and three assists for nine points. With one season of eligibility remaining, Waldspurger ranks 11th in program history for career assists, with 13 through her first three seasons.
Olson started in every game for the Gusties between the pipes in her second collegiate season, going 9-5-5 overall in 19 games. Olson allowed 20 goals all season for an average of 1.05 with an even 100 saves. She collected seven shutouts, a mark that ranked third in the conference regular season. Twice this year, Olson collected double digit saves, making 10 against both Simpson and Carleton.
Waldspurger and Olson, who were both named to the Fourth Team, are the first All-Region selections since
Sara Kugler '23 earned Third Team honors in 2022. They are the 12th and 13th Gusties to earn the award in the program's history, which boasts 19 total United Soccer Coaches All-Region selections. This is the first season since 2016 that the Gusties have had more than one selection in one year.
Joining Waldspurger and Olson were 18 other individuals from the MIAC: Jayla Ponce of Augsburg, Piper Dean, Kathryn Kresse, Avery Trapp, Zaraya Jordan, and Dylan Baker of Carleton, Ari Green, Kate Praetz, Kallie Tuominen, Natalie Pfleger, and Mallory Johnson of St. Catherine, Dakota Leonard, Lauryn Skoruppa, and Maya Wachter of Saint Mary's, and Katie Beaudry, Cat Duffy-Shaw, Sadie Klassen, and Emily Johnson of St. Olaf.
The Gusties finished sixth in the MIAC with a 4-4-3 record (9-5-5 overall), their second consecutive nine-win season, advancing to the MIAC Playoffs for the first time since 2021 where they fell to eventual runners-up Saint Mary's in the quarterfinals.
