SAINT PETER, Minn. - In a game where both teams struggled to find much offensively, MSOE found the sole goal of the match, dealing the Gusties a 1-0 setback.
The Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders (2-2-1, 0-0-0 NACC) held a small advantage in shots on goal, 5-3, over Gustavus (1-3-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) and used one of those to create the difference between the two teams. Senior goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) made four saves and first-year
Taylor Schilling (Mankato, Minn.) led with two shots on goal for the Gusties.
The first half in Saint Peter stayed scoreless, with both teams struggling to find their footing offensively for the full half. In the first 10 minutes, the MSOE Raiders held the edge, finding three shots on goal that forced saves from Olson but then the tide turned in favor of Gustavus. In a 10-minute session in the middle of the half, the Gusties had three shots, one of which by Schilling found its way to goal. Schilling found the second shot on goal for Gustavus as well with just over two minutes remaining in the half. MSOE held a slight advantage after the first 45 minutes with three shots on goal compared to the Gusties' two, but the match remained deadlocked.Â
The best chance of the second half for the Gusties came just 1:46 into the second session, when sophomore
Armana Ransanici (Hudson, Wis.) found junior
Meghan Colebeck (South St. Paul, Minn.) with a through ball. The shot by Colebeck was saved and would end up being the only shot on goal of the second half for Gustavus. The Raiders only had two shots on goal themselves, but one of those found the goal to give MSOE the win.Â
After five non-conference games, the Gusties start their MIAC campaign at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, hosting St. Olaf at the Gustie Soccer Field.
