MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — It's all Gusties after day three of the MIAC Championships. The Gustie men are dominating the field with a 204 point lead over Saint John's in second, while the Gustie women are 2.5 ahead of Macalester in second and 15.5 points ahead of 2023 MIAC Champs St. Catherine.
The Gustie men, who entered day three without a loss in the meet so far, suffered their first non-first place finish in the 400-IM to start the day. Saint John's Brayden Slavik took first, followed by the Gusties'
Logan Cyr who took second in the event in his first conference meet. The Gusties dominated the 100 butterfly, as
Peyton Richardson (48.78) and
Jonathan Cordano (49.88) took first and second in the event.
Brendan Collins was the highest Gustie finisher in the 200 free, taking fourth in 1:43.17, followed by fellow first-year AIden Shermak who took sixth in 1:44.00. Four Gusties finished in top-8 in the 100 breaststroke, led by the Ripken brothers who tag-teamed first and second in the event, with senior Kieran touching the wall first in 55.77 and brother Braden taking second in 56.53.
Nyden Hill finished fourth in 57.22, followed by
Brandon Wilcek who took eighth in 58.71.
Matt Strom added another individual win for the Gusties before the end of the day, taking first in the 100 backstroke in 49.63.
In the relays, the Gustie men took first in the 200 free relay, as the team of Braden and
Kieran Ripken, Strom, and Shermak touched the wall in 1:23.28. On the boards,
Andrew Jensen took fifth on the 1-meter with a 396.65 NCAA B-cut dive, followed by
Ryan Lester who posted a 395.90 B-cut dive for seventh.
For the Gustie women,
Marit Isaacson led the squad with a second-place finish in the 200 free, finishing in 1:53.89.
Stella Anderson Moye (1:57.49) added a seventh place finish in the event as well. In the 100 breaststroke,
Lindsay Sundby and
Leah Soukup tied for fourth in the finals race, both finishing in 1:06.97.
Lucy Peterson added another fourth-place finish, this time in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 58.26. The Gustie women also won the 200 free relay, as
Olivia Koeneman, Isaacson, Anderson Moye, and Peterson took first with an NCAA B time of 1:35.18.
The final day of competition begins Saturday with the last prelims session beginning at 10:30 followed by the finals at 6:30 p.m.
