MANKATO, Minn. — The Gustavus softball team continued its season under the dome on Friday, facing off against Martin Luther and Northwestern-St. Paul for the second weekend of the Bethany Lutheran Kwik Trip Invitational Saturday morning. The Gusties won big over Martin Luther, 11-2, before defeating UNW 6-3.
Gustavus 11, Martin Luther 2
A seven-run fifth inning gave the Gusties the early morning win, highlighted by a
Olivia Guggenberger home run to make the score 9-2.
The Gusties were on the board first, as
Macy McNally started the Gusties off with a single in her first at-bat. A double from
Caitlin Olafsson moved the first-year to third, and a
Lauren Lambert ground-out to third scored what would be the first of many runs for the Gusties. A single from
Carly Nelson brought Olafsson home for a 2-0 lead. Martin Luther evened the score at two apiece, getting two runs off two hits, but that would be all the offense the Knights could manage for the rest of the game.
Gustavus scored one in the second and one in the third to set up the big fifth inning with a 3-2 lead. Seven hits and four errors from the Knights pushed the lead to 11, closing out the game in five.
Guggenberger finished with two runs, a hit, and three RBI. McNally went 4-for-4 at the plate with a run, and Nelson 3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Megan Sherwood picked up the win, pitching all five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four batters.

The Gusties continued their winning way sin their afternoon game, rolling past Northwestern 6-3. The Gusties scored one in the first, two in the third and three in the fifth in the victory. The Eagles attempted a comeback, scoring two of their three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to defeat
Maizie Anderson, who allowed only four hits off 27 batters faced.
A
Carly Nelson single scored
Macy McNally to get the Gusties on the board early. Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the third, when a trio of Gustie singles and an error from the Eagles scored
Taylor Katzenmeyer and
Carly Olson.
Northwestern added one in the top of the fourth on a single to left field, but the Gusties stormed back with three runs off three hits in the fifth, including a two-run double from
Lauren Lambert to centerfield.
Four Gusties posted two hits in the second game, led by Lamberg, who went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI as well. Anderson picked up her second win of the season in the circle for the Gusties, striking out five batters in the process.
