CLAREMONT and RIVERSIDE, Calif. - No. 12 Gustavus men's tennis started its spring break trip Monday with a pair of losses in southern California. The Gusties' top team lost 7-2 to No. 8 nationally-ranked Williams College and then the second team lost 7-2 at Riverside City College, dropping to 11-7 overall.
Against Williams,
Caleb Fridinger and
Dominik Knutson claimed a doubles point at No. 3, winning 8-1. Rafael Costa won the lone singles match for the Gusties at No. 4, 6-2, 6-4. The top three singles matches went to a third set.
Against Riverside, the No. 2 doubles team of Oscar Wikstrom and
Geoffrey Youngs won 9-8 (11-9), while
Odin Fouchier won a singles point at No. 6, 6-1, 6-4. All five other singles matches went to a third set. The No. 1 doubles team of
Taona Mhwandagara and
Luke Fridinger lost a marathon breaker 9-8 (16-14).
The Gusties will enjoy the next two days off before playing No. 33 George Fox and Irvine Valley on Thursday.
