Softball Drops Two Against Colby and No. 14 MIT

CLERMONT, Fla. — After going 2-0 the day before, the Gustavus softball team fell victim to an opposite fate Wednesday, losing to Colby and No. 14 MIT on day three in Florida. The Gusties fell 8-5 to Colby before suffering a 5-1 loss at the hands of nationally-ranked MIT.

GAC 5, Colby 8

Facing Colby for the second time in as many days, the Gusties didn't have the same luck in game two, as 11 hits and a seventh inning grand slam helped the Mules steal the victory from the Gusties, who were up by one at the end of the sixth.

Colby struck first, scoring two runs on a single in the first inning. The Gusties responded immediately with two of their own, as Caitlin Olafsson sent Lauren Lambert and Olivia Guggenberger home in the bottom of the first.

The Mules added two more in the top of the third, one on a tripe to right field and the other on an RBI single to second. But, just as they had before, the Gusties matched Colby swing-for-swing, as Olafsson once again fueled the scoring play. A triple from the sophomore scored Carly Olson, before Olafsson scored her own run on a fielder's choice to even the score 4-4.

The Gusties took their first lead of the game in the sixth, as a Kayla Herda single to right center scored Madi Mueller who walked to start the inning. The one-run lead was not nearly enough, as a Kathryne Cla grand slam ended the game in favor of the Mules, 8-5.

Guggenberger and Olafsson each tallied a pair of hits in the game, while Herda and Breck Carlson accounted for the other two of the Gusties' total six. Ava Hamsund was credited with the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. Maizie Anderson allowed a hit and a run to close out the game for Hamsund in the seventh.

Gustavus 1, No. 14 MIT

The Gusties had a tall order ahead of them in their second of the day, facing off against the nationally-ranked Beavers of MIT. Gustavus was only able to manage one run on six of their hits in the game, while MIT scored five off eight hits.

The Beavers got on the board first, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first. A Carly Olson double in the third evened the score 1-1, scoring Guggenberger who led the inning off with a single to center field.

MIT got what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a Gustie error for a 2-1 lead. The Beavers wrapped up the game's scoring in the fourth, tallying three runs off four hits.

All six Gustie hits came off different bats, while Guggenberger ran in the team's only run. Maizie Anderson got the start in the circle, allowing five runs off four hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Megan Sherwood allowed four hits to close out the game.

The Gusties, now 6-10, face UW-Oshkosh and MIT on their final day of competition in Florida tomorrow.
