SAINT PETER and SAINT PAUL, Minn. - No. 13 Gustavus men's tennis competed as a split squad on Saturday and won both of its matches. The top team defeated Augustana (S.D.) 6-3 at the Steve Wilkinson Tennis Complex, while the second team beat Hamline 8-1 at Washington Tech. Magnet High School. The Gusties improve to 17-7 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC.Â
Against Augustana, the Gusties started the match by winning all three doubles matches. The top team of
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff, along with with No. 3 team of
Josh Christensen and
Jack Bergmeyer, both squeeked out wins of 8-7, while
Caleb Fridinger and
Dominik Knutson won 8-4 at No. 2.Â
The single matches were split an even 3-3. The Vikings won at one, four, and six, but both Bergmeyer and Haddorff won in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively, while Knutson claimed the final point at No. 2 with a 7-6, 6-7, 10-7 victory.Â
Against the Pipers, the Gusties dropped only one match and that was at No. 3 doubles in an 8-7 decision. Rafael Costa and
Taona Mhwandagara won 8-2 at No. 1, while Oscar Wikstrom and
Geoffrey Youngs also won 8-2 at No. 2. The Gusties then cruised through all six singles matches in straight sets, without allowing more than two points in any set.Â
Gustavus is back in action next Saturday, hosting Carleton at 3 p.m.Â
