ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Gustavus women's tennis team met a pair of MIAC opponents on the road Sunday, and came home with a pair of wins, defeating Hamline 9-0 and St. Catherine 8-1. The Gusties improve to 10-9 and 4-0 in the MIAC.
Gustavus 9, Hamline 0
The Gusties got off to a hot start against Hamline, shutting the Pipers out 9-0. Gustavus took a 3-0 lead after the doubles, led by the duo of
Allison Szalay and
Bethany Smith, who won 8-0 at No. 2.
Molly Austin and
Kaya De Bruijn won 8-1 at No. 1, before
Alli Laux and
Pavla Yakimova cleaned things up at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-5.
The Gusties won all their singles in straight sets, holding Hamline to a max of two points in 11 of 12 sets.
Gustavus 8, St. Catherine 1
The Gusties once again started off with a 3-0 sweep of the doubles competition, but not without a fight. St. Catherine's Kelsey Dorr and Sofia Walker gave De Bruijn and Austin a battle at No. 1 doubles, forcing a tie-breaker, but the Gusties claimed the 8-7 victory. Szalay and Smith won 8-5 at No. 2, while Laux and Yakimova won 8-0 in the final doubles pairing.
SCU's Walker claimed the only point for the Wildcats in the No. 2 singles, coming from behind to defeat Szalay 4-6, 6-0, 10-7.
Molly Austin in three sets at No. 1 singles over Dorr, ranked 18th in the region, while De Bruijn, Laux, Yakimova, and De Young all won in straight sets in singles No. 4 through No. 6, respectively.
The Gusties are back in action on Saturday, hosting Carleton for a battle of the final two undefeated teams in the MIAC.
