Softball Cruises Past Hamline for MIAC Sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Gustavus softball team cruised to its second consecutive MIAC sweep Saturday afternoon, defeating Hamline 6-2 and 10-3 on the road. The Gusties improve to 10-12 and are off to a 4-0 start in league play.

Gustavus 6, Hamline 2

The Gusties totaled 11 hits in game one against Hamline, scoring runs in four different innings. Maizie Anderson allowed single runs in the third and sixth inning, but it wasn't nearly enough for the Pipers to catch the Gusties.

A fielder's choice bunt from Peyton Stevermer scored run number one for the Gusties, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Gustavus tacked on two more in the top of the third, as a Caitlin Olafsson triple to left center scored Olivia Guggenberger, who singled on a bunt to start the inning. Carly Olson followed Olafsson with an RBI single to left center, scoring the sophomore for a 3-0 advantage. Hamline got one back in the bottom of the third, scoring on an RBI single to right field.

The Gusties, unfazed, scored two more in the fifth, once again on a fielder's choice, and another on a Stevermer double to right center. Madi Mueller led off the sixth with a triple to left field, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field from Guggenberger, scoring Mueller for the Gusties' final run of game one. Hamline scored one more on an RBI single through the left side, but couldn't catch the Gusties, dropping the first of the series 6-2.

Six Gusties totaled a hit in game one, led by Olafsson, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Anderson picked up her fifth win of the year with the complete game pitched, allowing two runs off six hits and striking out three batters.

Gustavus 10, Hamline 3

The Gusties continued to turn up the heat on the Pipers in game two, scoring 10 runs off 16 hits. The team now has double-digit hits in three of their last four games.

Olafsson picked up right where she left off, doubling to right center in inning one to score Guggenberger and Mueller who both reached on singles. Stevermer added another RBI single to score Olafsson, while Lauren Lambert scored run four of the first on a wild pitch. Hamline cut the lead in half, scoring on a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the first.

The 4-2 lead held until the top of the fourth, when Olson sent a single to center field to score Guggenberger. The Gusties added four more off four hits in the fifth, including two triples, one from Stevermer and the other from Macy McNally. McNally scored fellow first-year Stevermer, while a Guggenberger single scored McNally. Kayla Herda reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Mueller and Guggenberger, bringing the lead to 9-2.

Hamline scored a solo run in the fifth off an RBI single, and the Gusties added one more for good measure in the sixth, as Taylor Katzenmeyer stole home for the final run of the game.

Every Gustie that batted recorded a hit in the game, led by Guggenberger and Stevermer with three each. Ava Hamsund picked up the second conference win of her career, allowing two earned runs off nine hits.

The Gusties are back in action Wednesday, heading to Saint Mary's for a doubleheader in Winona on Tuesday.
