WHITEWATER, Wis. - Playing down to the final singles match of the day, No. 18 Gustavus couldn't pull off the upset of host No. 14 UW-Whitewater in the second round of the NCAA Championships, losing 5-4 on Saturday. The Gusties end their season with an overall record of 23-8.
Starting the match with doubles, UW-Whitewater took the early lead with an 8-4 win at No. 3. The Gusties answered at No. 1 as
Gage Gohl and
Tyler Haddorff won 8-5. At No. 2,
Marco Siviero and
Josh Christensen played into a breaker but lost 8-7 (7-2).
The Warkawks then took a 3-1 lead with a straight set win at No. 4. The Gusties made the difference one as Christensen rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2.
Dominik Knutson then tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Jack Bergmeyer put the Gusties one point away from advancing to the region championship with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 6, but the Warhawks evened the score at 4-4 with a win at No. 3. All the attention shifted to court one as
Marco Siviero fought back from a first set 6-3 loss to win the second 6-2. But UWW's top player Luke Vandonslear sealed the match with a 6-3 third set victory.
