SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 14 Gustavus men's tennis cruised to a 5-0 victory over Macalester in the MIAC semifinals on Friday at the Wilkinson Tennis Complex. The Gusties, now 21-7 overall, host Carleton at 1 p.m. Saturday for the MIAC playoff championship.
In doubles action,
Tyler Haddorff and
Jack Bergmeyer claimed the first point 8-1 at No. 3.
Caleb Fridinger and
Dominik Knutson followed with an 8-3 win at No. 2, while
Marco Siviero and
Josh Christensen secured the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 1.
Knutson secured the first singles point, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, while Rafael Costa followed just seconds later with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 to complete the victory. The four remaining singles matches were in the second set with the Gusties leading in all matches.
"The guys played a strong match today," Head Coach
Tommy Valentini said. "We got our game going nicely in the doubles. Our energy was good there and we executed well at all three spots. We carried the momentum over into the singles and did well to stay present all day. We're thankful to come through today, and to have the opportunity to welcome the challenge tomorrow."
